Advice from Attorney, Michael Thomas.
As you may already know, Personal Injury Protection insurance coverage, also known as “PIP”, pays for 80% of your medical bills when you are injured in a car crash, up to $10,000. If you are receiving PIP benefits under your insurance policy, your insurer may require you to have a Compulsory Medical Examination (CME). A CME is an examination performed by a doctor hired by the insurance company to determine whether you still need medical treatment.
If the CME doctor determines that further treatment of your injury is not necessary, your insurance company may discontinue paying your PIP benefits for your scheduled medical treatment. This does not mean that you should stop seeing your medical provider if you are still in pain. If you suffer from a worsening of symptoms, it is important that you go back to your doctor and receive treatment. If your insurance company denies coverage for this treatment, you may have a claim against your insurance company for wrongfully discontinuing your benefits.
If you believe that you have been wrongfully denied your PIP benefits, or if you would like to know more about PIP coverage, it is important that you speak with an attorney as soon as possible about your rights.
